On invitation by New Emergences, I participated in a 3-day residency at Willem Twee studios in Den Bosch. New Emergences is a platform to amplify voices that are underrepresented within digital media culture, electronic music and sound art. The Willem Twee studios offer a unique collection of analog equipment from the 50s and 60s, and synthesizers from the 70s and 80s. It's the kind of environment many composers would go wild in. Personally, I feel often intimidated by machines with many options. I'm not that attracted to a professional studio environment, and don't consider myself a musician or composer. But I enjoyed taking up the challenge, and decided to use those few days to make a recording with the tools at hand: my voice, a few hours of writing, and the machines and instruments present. This resulted in the composition Reading the Room - all sounds are made by me somehow, including touching the Grand Piano.
